Open Science
Europe's marine and aquatic research capacity is world-class, but distributed across many countries, institutions and infrastructures. A dataset produced in Portugal may answer a question asked in Sweden; a result generated today may prove essential to a project five years from now.​

When research services are shared openly whenever possible, managed responsibly, and made available in ways that allow others (researchers, industry, policymakers and society) to build on them, research moves faster, duplication decreases, and public investment in science delivers more
AQUASERV is committed.
As a Horizon Europe project, AQUASERV follows the European Commission's Open Science requirements. But the project's ambition goes further than compliance. ​
Open Results
Peer-reviewed publications arising from AQUASERV-supported research are made openly accessible in trusted repositories.
FAIR
data
Research data generated through the project and its transnational access activities are curated, documented and deposited in appropriate public archives, with the target of sharing at least 75% of project data through EOSC, EMODnet and related European platforms.
More interoperable services
AQUASERV is enhancing the FAIRness of its digital services, strengthening their connection to European data infrastructures such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), Blue Cloud and the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean.
Skills and Support
Users receive expert guidance in research data management throughout their projects — from planning to final data deposition — alongside training on data standards, ethics and GDPR.

By embedding Open Science into everyday service provision, AQUASERV aims to leave behind data management practices and infrastructure connections that persist well beyond the project's lifetime.
What this means for AQUASERV users
Every researcher granted access to AQUASERV services agrees to follow Responsible Open Science practices, including depositing data in a public archive and publishing results openly whenever possible.

In practice, each funded project prepares a Data Management Plan (DMP) describing what data will be generated and how they will be managed, shared and preserved. AQUASERV provides templates through the OpenAIRE Argos platform, a step-by-step tutorial, and expert support at every stage.

However, open by default does not mean open at any cost. AQUASERV applies strict safeguards for personal data (GDPR), genetic resources and biodiversity data (Nagoya Protocol and Access and Benefit Sharing), and legitimate commercial or intellectual property interests. Where data cannot be shared openly, the reasons are documented transparently in the project's data management plans.
